The scene is set in the infamous Hell Creek Formation and features two of its most iconic species: Tyrannosaurus rex and Ankylosaurus magniventris.
In the illustration, I wanted to depict a chance encounter: the large theropod, with blood on its snout, has presumably fed recently. The ankylosaur, startled while drinking, swings its clubbed tail defensively as a deterrent.
The tyrannosaur has no intention of engaging the herbivore and continues on its way, asserting its powerful presence with a vocalization. The Ankylosaurus remains cautiously alert.
